Cleanup efforts continue after massive flooding in Uvalde continue

 

UVALDE, Texas — Massive flooding beginning Wednesday cut off the city from the rest of Texas, closing its major roads. Today, all of them are open except for FM 481's bridge over the Nueces River, where part of the bridge fell into the water.

"I've seen it flood, but nothing like this," said Ernest Flores.

Ernest Flores, who lives on South Wood Street, says he's one of the lucky ones. The water came only three inches from getting into his home.

"We were very fortunate, very fortunate," said Ernest Flores.

But others can't say the same. David Gonzales, who lives just down the road on Garden Street, says water got into his home while he was sleeping.

"The water got up, I don't know the inches, but about that," said David Gonzales, pointing to the line of water damage on the wall about 5 inches from the floor.

Gonzales says it did extensive damage to all the woodwork and furniture in the house.

"There's no saving that. There is no saving that," said David Gonzales.

The City of Uvalde announced today on its Facebook page that the municipal landfill will be open until 5:00 p.m. for residents to dispose of any debris from their property. They will also have roll-off containers for trash placed at Morales Jr. High School and the Willie De Leon Civic Center tomorrow.

Some who still can't go home are at the William R. Mitchell Uvalde County Fairplex. According to the police department, as of noon, 79 people are still seeking refuge there, and officials are working to get them home.

Gonzales says he suffered at least a thousand dollars in damage, but his friend will help him replace the damaged wood in his home for free.
