SAN ANTONIO - A man was killed and his mother was wounded when someone in a white SUV opened fire on a car early Monday on the Northeast Side.
The deadly shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. near Crestway and Waterside drives.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said deputies arrived to find a gray car riddled with bullet holes. Two of the four people inside had been shot.
One of the occupants, the rear passenger, a male in his 30s, was killed and he was pronounced deceased here on the scene," Salazar said. "A female in the car in her late 50s was also shot several times, but she was transported from here by EMS, and she's in what's described to me as stable condition at SAMC.
Salazar said the two victims are mother and son. The man was sitting in the back right passenger seat, while his mother was in the front passenger seat.
A second woman who was sitting in the back seat was not hit and remained at the scene. Salazar said she is believed to be a family friend and was being questioned by investigators.
The woman driving the gray car, however, ran off after the shooting and has not yet been found. Salazar stressed that investigators do not consider her a suspect.
"At this point, we don't believe that that driver is a suspect," Salazar said. "We're treating that. We're looking to treat that person as a witness. But for whatever reason, they fled the scene."
Salazar said investigators are also concerned the driver could have been wounded in the barrage of gunfire.
We want to make sure she's okay because it is possible she may have been shot in the process," Salazar said. "There's again 10 bullet holes in that vehicle. Several of them had been accounted for. Obviously, the victims were struck several times. But again, it is possible this person may be injured.
Deputies planned to use drones to search a nearby wooded area in case the woman ran into the area after the shooting.
Investigators believe the gray car had been traveling from Whiteside Drive when a newer-model white Volvo SUV approached, possibly from behind.
"We think that that vehicle, that the white SUV, may have come from from on Whiteside, but we're not 100% certain of that," Salazar said. "Just that that vehicle approached, started. And emptied probably about 10 rounds into that vehicle, into the gray vehicle that was just towed off."
The white SUV then fled east on Crestway, possibly toward the Kitty Hawk area.
Investigators have recovered surveillance video and still images of what they believe is the suspect vehicle. They're asking people who live or work in the area to check their cameras for anything captured around the time of the shooting.
We have had the opportunity to recover some video and still photos of what we believe is the suspect vehicle at this point," Salazar said. "But we're still looking for additional videos of in the area of people that may have captured something.
What led to the shooting remains a mystery.
"At this point, no. We don't have motive," Salazar said. "You know, it would be pure speculation for me to say at this point."
Salazar said investigators hope additional interviews with the surviving victims and witnesses will shed light on what happened before the gunfire.
"Look, straight up random acts of violence like this are rare. It does occur, but it is rare," Salazar said. "I believe that there was some sort of interaction or relationship between these folks at some point."
Salazar said the number of shots fired leads him to believe the gunfire may not have been random, although he emphasized that investigators don't yet know what happened.
To empty 10 rounds into a car, that to me, again speculation, but to me that indicates a high level of anger," Salazar said. "You really want harm or death to come upon the people in a vehicle to empty 10 rounds into it.
The gray car was towed to an evidence facility, where investigators planned to conduct a more thorough search.
