Jesse Salame named acting San Antonio police chief

SAN ANTONIO — Assistant Chief Jesse Salame will take over as acting chief of the San Antonio Police Department on Saturday, July 11, city officials announced.

Current Chief William McManus retires on Friday after 20 years on the job.

Salame, a 26-year veteran of the department, steps into the leadership role as the city continues its search for a permanent police chief.

"I know Jesse well and he is a strong leader who is well respected within and outside the Department," City Manager Erik Walsh said in a statement. "I have full confidence in Jesse leading the Police Department."

Salame brings extensive leadership experience to the position. He was appointed deputy police chief in December 2022, serving as chief of staff and managing internal affairs, the training academy, the public information office, and open records. In November 2024, he was promoted to assistant chief, where he oversaw the department's Support Operations Bureau.

The national recruitment process for a permanent police chief remains ongoing. City officials say they expect to appoint a permanent chief in September.

McManus will not be saying goodbye to the Alamo City. He has accepted an employment opportunity in San Antonio. The Pearl announced McManus will join the company as Vice President of Safety & Security. The new role will have responsibility for ensuring safety and security at all Silver Ventures real estate developments, hotels, restaurants, retail shops and entertainment venues.

“Chief McManus is one of the most respected law enforcement leaders in the United States,” says Bryant Ambelang, Chief Executive Officer of Silver Ventures. “With the significant traffic growth of our current destinations, plus the expansion in retail, restaurants, hotels and multi-family, Chief McManus will create a blueprint that will extend the safety and hospitality our current residents and visitors enjoy into our new developments.”
