SAN ANTONIO - Fire investigators are trying to determine whether someone intentionally set a fire that tore through part of a Northwest Side duplex early Friday morning.
The fire broke out around 4 a.m. at a duplex in the Shakertown area near Callaghan Road.
When firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting from both the front and back of the duplex, with heavy smoke pouring from the building. Crews quickly attacked the fire from the outside before moving inside to keep it from spreading.
Their fast response helped contain the flames to one side of the duplex, which suffered extensive damage. The neighboring unit was left with smoke damage but avoided the worst of the fire.
Everyone inside made it out safely, but one dog was unable to escape and died in the fire. No people were hurt.

Because of what firefighters found at the scene, investigators are looking into the possibility that the fire was intentionally set. Fire investigators spent the morning gathering evidence, and arson investigators could be brought in if the investigation points in that direction.
