SAN ANTONIO - Happening today, Bexar County commissioners are expected to take a closer look at conditions inside the county jail, including its growing population and how inmates with mental health needs are being cared for.
An hour-long presentation is scheduled for this afternoon covering jail population trends, diversion programs and overcrowding.
Commissioners will also discuss whether existing county buildings could be reused or repurposed to house inmates with mental health needs. The presentation will explore options for treatment and rehabilitation, including the role of the state hospital and the impact of the recent closure of Laurel Ridge Treatment Center.
Commissioners are also expected to receive an update on Laurel Ridge, which announced in April that it was laying off more than 600 employees. The closure resulted in a significant loss of mental health beds in the community, raising concerns that more people experiencing mental health crises could end up in the county jail instead.
