LA PRYOR, Texas — Authorities have identified the man who died after being swept away in the Nueces River near La Pryor over the weekend.
Twenty-five-year-old Fred Peters VI was swept away around 4 p.m. on July 25 while in the Nueces River. Reports say Peters had gone underwater and didn't resurface.
The Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department's Rescue Boat Team, along with air support, launched an extensive search of the river. Crews later found Peters downstream, and the mission shifted from a rescue to a recovery operation.
Peters is remembered as an avid outdoorsman who turned his passion for wildlife into a career. The 25-year-old managed the 501 Ranch in Uvalde, where he guided hunts and cared for the land, and had recently started a game bird business with a close friend. A graduate of Texas A&M University-Kingsville's Ranch and Wildlife Management program, Peters was described by loved ones as hardworking, generous and happiest when hunting, fishing or sharing the outdoors with others.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to Peters being swept away.
The incident happened just days after heavy rainfall caused rivers and waterways across South Central Texas to run high and fast, prompting repeated warnings from emergency officials about the dangers of entering swollen rivers and floodwaters.
