SAN ANTONIO — U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and acting U.S. Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling toured Toyota Motor Manufacturing’s San Antonio facility Tuesday before discussing the company’s expansion, job growth and manufacturing investment in Texas.
Officials highlighted Toyota’s $3.6 billion investment, which they said will double the size of the San Antonio factory and add 2,000 jobs. They said suppliers could bring another 1,000 jobs to the area.
Production at the plant is expected to increase from roughly 200,000 trucks a year to 350,000, with about 150,000 trucks currently manufactured in Mexico shifting to San Antonio.
They also discussed workforce development, including Toyota’s partnerships with local workforce boards, community colleges and schools to prepare people for manufacturing careers.
The expansion includes plans to produce roughly 500,000 axles in San Antonio for vehicles built locally and at other U.S. factories. The first chassis from a new production line is expected in fall 2026, while construction of another factory is expected to take about two years.
Cruz also discussed Toyota’s use of robotics and artificial intelligence, pointing to the company’s expansion and hiring plans as an example of technology being used alongside job growth.
