SAN ANTONIO - Two Texas congressmen are urging several municipalities in Bexar County to stop participating in federal immigration enforcement through agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Reps. Joaquin Castro and Greg Casar called on Balcones Heights, China Grove, Saint Hedwig, Von Ormy, Sandy Oaks and Hollywood Park to end their 287(g) agreements with ICE. The agreements allow ICE to deputize local law enforcement to carry out federal immigration enforcement.
The version of the agreement in question allows local officers to stop, question and detain people based on suspicion they may be in the country illegally. Many of those detained end up in facilities such as the ICE detention center in Dilley.
