Texas activates rescue resources as storms raise flood concerns in Austin area

 

AUSTIN, Texas — Storms moving through Central Texas this morning are raising concerns about heavy rain and flash flooding, prompting state agencies to stage emergency resources and urge residents to prepare.

At Waller Creek at East 45th Street in Austin, water levels did not appear too high early this morning, but officials warned conditions can change quickly when heavy rain moves through. Gov. Greg Abbott’s office said the state has activated emergency response resources, including rescue boats, helicopters and other equipment staged to help local officials if conditions worsen. The Texas Division of Emergency Management said those resources are ready and urged people to plan ahead and follow local guidance.

“Severe storms in the forecast this week bring an increased risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding across large portions of TX. Make a plan and follow directions of local officials,” the agency said in a post on X. The Texas Department of Transportation also warned drivers to be cautious as storms move across the state.  “Heavy rain and severe storms are expected across Texas this week, bringing threats of flash flooding. Stay weather aware and remember: Turn around, don't drown. Check http://DriveTexas.org for current road conditions,” TxDOT said.

Texas Game Wardens said they are also preparing for possible flooding impacts by positioning personnel and equipment in advance.

“Texas Game Wardens are pre-positioning personnel and specialized search and rescue resources ahead of the potential for heavy rainfall and flash flooding in portions of Texas. Resources include search and rescue boats, shallow-draft vessels, four-wheel drive vehicles,” the agency said.
