SAN ANTONIO - A guarded entrance, security cameras, and household safes. None of that has prevented burglars from knocking off homes in one of San Antonio’s more exclusive neighborhoods on the North Side.
Now homeowners and SAPD are asking for help.
The News 4 I-Team has uncovered how the burglars are breaking in and getting away with cash and valuables worth up to $5 million dollars.
In some cases, the burglars hike up into the expansive backyards and then they throw rocks at the windows to see if there is an alarm system or if anybody's home. If nothing happens, then they break in.
A homeowner's security camera captured video of a burglar entering through the backyard fence, then he stands at a distance throwing rocks at the back windows.
Another burglar joins him and they casually walk up the steps to the porch and enter the home through a busted glass door.
It was one of numerous burglaries and attempted burglaries from February through July.
"They went through our entire house, unfortunately we didn't have our alarm set," said one resident.
Several homeowners in the Estates at Champions Run shared their security video and photos with the I-Team but did not want their faces shown because they're worried the burglars might come back.
“I mean I was in complete shock, particularly when I looked at my safe, spun around, cut open, and I thought, this is serious," said one homeowner.
In at least two cases the burglars broke into safes, one contained more than a hundred thousand dollars in cash and expensive watches.
“I'm angry. This makes me very angry that he invaded our privacy, and he thinks this is just a free ticket for him to come here and rob us," another neighbor added.
One couple's security camera managed to get a shot of one of the burglars, who have been targeting the gated Stone Oak neighborhood.
SAPD believes they have a photo of one of the burglars using a victim's stolen credit cards to make purchases at a local department store.
One homeowner told us he is frustrated because he says SAPD didn’t look for fingerprints at all the homes and didn't use its chopper to search for suspects.
“There's 150 residents out here approximately and we pay tons of property tax, and the San Antonio Police Department is doing nothing."
SAPD told the I-Team: “Property crimes detectives are actively working with the victims and the community to positively identify the suspect. Investigators take every burglary incident seriously and thoroughly investigate every case."
After we contacted SAPD the department posted on Facebook asking for the public's help with the case.
Meanwhile homeowners made up their own signs offering a $25 thousand dollar reward for information leading to an arrest.
“We're not getting any help, it's just getting swept under the rug," one homeowner said.
