Perseid meteor shower viewing guide: One of the best nights to look up

SAN ANTONIO - If you've been waiting for a good excuse to get away from the city lights and spend a few hours looking up, tonight is the night.

Tonight into Thursday morning brings the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, and this year nature has arranged almost ideal viewing conditions: the peak occurs with the new moon, leaving the sky free of bright moonlight.

And the Perseids aren't the only reason August 12 is getting attention. The solar system has put on quite a show around this date, including a gathering of planets in the morning sky.

The Main Event: The Perseids

They're produced when Earth crashes through a stream of debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Those tiny particles hit Earth's atmosphere at tremendous speed, producing the bright streaks we casually call shooting stars.

Observers can sometimes see around 90 meteors an hour or more near the peak. The shower is also known for relatively bright meteors, occasional fireballs and glowing trails that can linger briefly after a meteor disappears.

Don't expect 90 meteors every hour from your backyard in San Antonio, though. That's an idealized dark-sky rate. City lights, haze, trees, buildings and simply how much sky you can see will reduce the number considerably.

But 2026 gives us something we didn't have last year: no bright moon competing with the meteors. That could make a dramatic difference.

What Time Should You Go Outside?

You can certainly catch Perseids during the evening, but the show generally improves after midnight.

That's because the shower's radiant — the point from which the meteors appear to originate — rises higher as the night progresses. By the hours before dawn, Earth is also rotating us more directly into the incoming stream of comet debris.

So think of tonight in stages.

Before midnight: You may catch fewer meteors, but an occasional long, bright Perseid can sweep across a large portion of the sky.

Midnight to about 2 a.m.: Activity should become noticeably better.

2 a.m. through dawn: This is the prime viewing window.

You don't actually need to stare at the constellation Perseus. In fact, you'll generally have a better experience looking across a broad section of sky away from the radiant.

Meteor watching is one astronomical event where your eyes are the best equipment you own. Give them 20–30 minutes to adjust to darkness, put the phone away and find the widest unobstructed view possible.

There's been plenty of talk about a six-planet alignment on August 12, but there's an important timing distinction. This isn't really a Wednesday-night event.

The planetary gathering was primarily a pre-dawn Wednesday morning show, with Saturn and Neptune rising first, followed by Uranus and Mars and other planets appearing closer to sunrise. Four — Mercury, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn — were potentially visible without a telescope, while Uranus and Neptune required binoculars or a telescope.

So if you're heading outside tonight specifically expecting six bright planets lined up across the evening sky, that's not what you'll see.

While you're waiting for the next meteor, look almost straight up. Three brilliant stars dominate the summer evening sky: Vega, Deneb and Altair.

Together they form the enormous Summer Triangle.

Vega is particularly easy to identify as one of the brightest stars overhead. Once you've found it, look for Deneb and Altair and you'll begin recognizing one of the easiest large-scale patterns in the summer sky. And if you can get well away from San Antonio's light pollution, there's another reward.

The Milky Way runs through this part of the sky.

Under a truly dark South Texas sky, it can appear as a pale, almost cloudy band stretching overhead. You're looking along the densely populated plane of our own galaxy.

And Then There Are the Satellites

Spend an hour under a dark sky tonight and there's a good chance you'll notice something that doesn't behave like a meteor at all. A steady point of light may slowly cross the sky. That's probably a satellite.

Meteors streak across the atmosphere in a fraction of a second. Satellites move steadily across the sky for minutes. An airplane usually gives itself away with blinking navigation lights. It's a surprisingly fun game while you're waiting for Perseids: meteor, airplane or satellite? After a while, you'll recognize the difference immediately.

The Best Way to Watch Tonight

You don't need expensive equipment.

Find the darkest location you reasonably can, preferably with a wide horizon. Bring a reclining lawn chair or blanket. Turn off exterior lights. Put your phone on its dimmest setting — or better yet, don't look at it. Then give yourself some time.

Meteor showers don't perform on command. You might go several minutes without seeing anything and suddenly catch three meteors in quick succession. That's part of the experience.

Best viewing: Midnight through dawn Thursday
