Two children shot while sleeping after gunfire strikes East Side home

SAN ANTONIO — A quiet night on Comanche Sunrise on the East Side ended with two children in the hospital after police said they were shot while sleeping.

Police said the children, ages 6 and 10, were struck by gunfire in their legs and back when bullets pierced through their home around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Investigators believe the shots came from behind the home. Police found bullet holes in the back fence that showed the trajectory of the rounds into the house.

Neighbors said the family recently moved in. “They just moved, they’re fairly new to that house, but unfortunately people move in and out all the time. They’ve only been living there for about a month,” said neighbor Pamela Walker.

Walker called the shooting “awful,” adding, “They really need to do something more in regards to gun control.”

As police worked to piece together what happened, neighbors described ongoing concerns about gunfire in the area.

“You'll hear guns being popped off at night, after 10 o'clock, after 11 o'clock, you'll just hear it, and you go right back to bed, but I've never seen anything cross over into other people's houses,” said neighbor Russell Hendricks.

Hendricks said he wants more action taken. “I wish there was more of a response to it, because there's a house behind us where there's a lot of gunfire, but there's also a lot of music, but you can make as many reports as you want. It still happens every single week,” he said.

Police say there is no suspect information, nor have any arrest been made.
